Well-trimmed hedges stay full to the ground and hold their shape through Indiana, PA winters
Fresh mulch and clean edging make a bed look sharp, but an overgrown hedge undoes all of it. Hedge trimming gets put off because it seems cosmetic. However, it is structural work. Shrubs across Indiana County push hard through a humid summer, then take a beating from wet snow. Regular shrub trimming decides whether a hedge fills in or goes hollow at the bottom.
Curb Appeal Holds All Season
Clean lines read as a maintained property from the road. Because the shape gets set early in the season, it stays crisp all summer.
Timing Matters More Than Technique
Every species sets its buds at a different point in the season. So hedge trimming done at the wrong time costs you a full year of growth.
Sunlight Reaches the Lower Branches
We taper hedges slightly wider at the bottom than the top. That way light still hits the lower branches, which is what keeps them full.
Pests Get Spotted Early
Dense, unpruned interiors trap moisture and hide problems. Once the plant gets thinned out, scale and mites turn up before they spread.
Snow Will Not Split Them
Heavy wet snow pulls arborvitae and upright yew apart at the leaders. Structural pruning tightens them first, so the weight has somewhere to go.
Overgrown Hedges Still Recover
Most neglected hedges come back with staged cuts over two or three seasons. Yew and privet handle a hard reset well, while arborvitae will not.

FAQ about hedge trimming in Indiana, PA and its surrounding counties
How much does hedge trimming cost?
Hedge trimming is priced by how long and how tall the hedge is, and how easy it is to get to. A waist-high boxwood border along a walkway is a different job than a row of ten-foot privacy arborvitae along a property line. Most hedge trimming jobs run between $200-$1,000. Fill out our intake form with a rough length and height and we will give you a real number before you commit to anything.
How often should my hedges be trimmed?
It depends on what they are. Fast growers like privet usually need two or three trims a season to hold a clean shape. Boxwood and yew are happy with one or two, and arborvitae generally needs only a light trim once a year. We will tell you what your hedge needs after we see it.
When is the best time to trim hedges in Indiana, PA?
Most hedges get their main trim in late spring or early summer, once the first flush of new growth has come in. A second pass in mid to late summer keeps fast growers tidy. We stop trimming by early September so the new growth has time to harden before the first frost. Flowering hedges like forsythia and lilac are the exception and get trimmed right after they bloom.
Why is my hedge bare at the bottom?
Almost always because it was trimmed wider at the top than the bottom. The top shades out the lower branches, and without sunlight they thin out and drop their leaves. We shape hedges slightly narrower at the top so light reaches all the way down, and most bare bottoms fill back in over a season or two.
Can you save a hedge that has gotten out of control?
Usually, yes. Yew and privet can handle a hard cut and grow back from old wood, so we bring them down in stages over two or three seasons. Arborvitae and most junipers will not regrow from bare wood, so the plan for those is more careful. We will be honest with you if a hedge is past the point of saving.
What is the difference between hedge trimming and shrub trimming?
A hedge is a row of plants shaped to act as one wall, so the goal is straight lines, even height, and a full face from top to bottom. Shrub trimming is for individual plants in your beds, where the goal is keeping each one healthy and in its natural shape. Most properties need some of both, and we can take care of them in the same visit.
What happens after I fill out the form?
We get back to you within three business days, and you will be prompted to pick a day and time for a consultation as soon as you submit. We walk the property, look at what the hedges are and how they have been cut, and put together a plan from there.
